I’ve come to find that a lot of people i meet from puerto rico and other latin american countries (except Brazil of coarse) seem to take pride in their european heritage but never take notice of their african heritage. I was just wondering are they taught about the slave trade in those countries and the african influence around them (food, music,etc) or is it a taboo. is considering yourself africana instead of hispanic frowned upon in those countries or not as “cool”.

   I don’t think these people do as much navel gazing as African Americans do. Besides they were freed 100 years before Americans slaves were and have been treated as equals for that long as well.
   Do Americans know that there were White slaves as well as African slaves?

   we do(puerto ricans) are proud of our african heritage. We still celebrate some music, food and literature……. it’s part of our culture!

   I think the problem is that the history about our african ancestry and heritage isn’t taught as much in schools ans european history.
