what?! slaves were stripped of their culture and any sense of identity; white masters prohibited them to communicate in their native tongue and used brutally cruel and deadly punishments to put the fear of god in them. they existed only to serve the white man honey. i dont know *** theyre teaching you in school but it scares me

good question but the words african…slave …and identity dont go together …think about it “immigrants” from european and asian countries have documented records still kept today and you can see when ur family memeber came over etc….but slaves didnt have the same thing….almost no records exist…and thats part of taking your identity…european and asan families did get split up coming here but not at the rate of africans….so its extremely hard to find out little details that are easy for everyone else
For instance i take forensics….and once i get all the parts and evidence its easy to find a causes and trace the scene back to where it began…..but if the evidence of the beginning of the crime are erased i cant do anything about it….i dont know where to begin
The thing is the they didn’t regain their African heritage, they just completely assimilated to “american” ideology.
Um.. slaves were forced to learn American culture… they weren’t allowed to speak their african languages as slaves, forced to learn english, and the names… they were hard to pronounce for the settlers so, so they gave them European names…. just about every other country that had slaves in their country still have their african culture alive TODAY except us: (Brazil - the samba music, the capoeira martial arts dance, and in the caribbean especially the Spanish-speaking countries you can hear african culture in the music such as in merengue, even salsa, and the cumbia dance was basically a slave-invented dance) But here we had to form an African-American culture.
Our heritage is American. “African” is not a culture. But we evolved in to a greater and more dynamic culture than that of Africans. Ever heard of the phrase, “What ever dosent kill you, makes you stronger”?
